Cop’s son held for defrauding eight

The Kandivali police on Tuesday arrested the son of a retired West Bengal policeman for defrauding eight people.

The Kandivali police on Tuesday arrested the son of a retired West Bengal policeman for defrauding eight people. The accused, one Ajit Dey (37),was brought to the police station by one of his alleged victims,Chetan Thakur,a member of a political party. Thakur, who claimed to have nabbed Dey from his house at Kandivili Gaon, later contacted the other victims also. After receiving the information, they joined him at the police station.

Dey has allegedly cheated many people to the tune of several lakhs over the past few years. He made his ‘clients’ believe that he had contacts with influential people who can solve their problems or help them in their businesses.

Recently,a case has been filed against him by one of his schoolmates one Iqbal Singh Matharu (39). Dey had allegedly duped him of Rs 3.54 lakh for settling some court cases. During the investigation, the police found out that a case had been filed against him in 2004 as well.

“Dey had met Matharu in his Charkop office for the first time after school. He gained Matharu’s confidence after meeting him for a few days. Matharu told him that he had four property cases against him in the Dindoshi Sessions court and was worried of losing them. Hearing this,Dey told him that he knew a person who could help Matharu get judgments in his favour,” said Senior Police Inspector S Jaiswal of the Kandivali police station.

“Matharu never thought that his friend Dey would cheat him. Taking advantage of Matharu’s gullibility,Dey kept taking money in instalments from him. Finally,Matharu realised he was being duped. The person who had been introduced to Matharu was something else all together,” he said.

Asked about Dey’s past case and records,he said,“ He had duped a mobile dealer of Rs 60,000. He is a graduate from Rizvi College and allegedly trades in rubber in the name of Star Enterprises from his house. He used to claim that his ‘contacts’ would help people settle cases or even get them contracts. In one such case,he received money from a man offering him a transport contract with the Grand Hyatt. We are presently waiting for people to approach us with their complaints.”
