A week after Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inspected the ongoing pre-monsoon desilting works in the city, the BMC imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on a contractor for negligence of duty.

Every year, the civic body removes silt from all the major and minor drains, rivers and water-bodies in Mumbai as a precautionary meaure to minimise waterlogging in the city and facilitate free flow of water into storm water drains during heavy rain.

Between May 18 and 19, Shinde carried out a ground-level inspection of the desilting works in the city and suburbs.

Sources in the BMC said during the inspection, Shinde flagged discrepancies in the desilting work at one spot near the Milan Subway at Khar. Sources in the municipal corporation said following this, showcause notices were issued to the contractor.

“After looking into the cause, we have imposed a fine on the contractor responsible for carrying out the desilting works. It was a minor nullah, so the action was taken by the local ward office,” said an official.
