A sessions court in Mumbai on Tuesday granted bail to a contractor arrested in connection with the Ghatkopar hoarding collapse case.

The court granted bail to Sagar Kumbhar, who was entrusted with the construction of the foundation of the hoarding, which collapsed on May 13 killing at least 17 people and injuring 80 others.

The Mumbai police SIT, probing the the case, had arrested Kumbhar from Goa in June.

Kumbhar had said that his further custody is not required in the case as the Mumbai police has already filed a chargesheet. He had also sought parity with a co-accused, engineer Manoj Sanghu, who was granted bail last week by the sessions court.

Additional Public Prosecutor, Iqbal Solkar opposed the bail plea of Kumbhar by citing that the construction work was done without the design being proof-checked as required.

The prosecution claimed that the accused in connivance with each other had hastily erected the inferior quality hoarding to gain maximum financial benefit without undertaking checks.

Four persons were arrested in the Ghatkopar collapse case.
