(File Photo)WITH A focus on social engineering and community outreach ahead of the code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls, the Maharashtra state cabinet on Monday approved a decision to set up a minority commissionerate at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and to establish a minority cell in every district of the state.
This Commissionerate will be under the Minority Development Department and minority cells will be created in 36 districts under the control of Collectors.
The state cabinet also decided that mother’s name will be mandatory on all government documents like birth certificates, school documents, property documents, Aadhar cards and PAN cards. The decision is to be implemented from May 1, 2024.
“The state’s Public Health Department and the central government will discuss on making necessary amendments in the birth and death register. After receiving the order from the central government, it was approved to record the name of the child in the birth/death register in the form of the mother’s name, followed by father’s name and surname. It has also been approved to allow a woman’s maiden name to be entered in property documents. In the case of orphans and similar exceptional cases, an exemption will be given to record the birth and death certificate of children,”an official said.
To raise the standard of living of tribals in the state, the cabinet also decided to introduce two new schemes to establish employment, self-employment and agricultural production companies. The schemes will be implemented through Shabari Tribal Finance and Development Corporation.

Maharashtra State transgender Policy 2024 was also approved in the cabinet meeting on Monday under which eligible transgenders can avail benefits under several schemes implemented by different departments of the state government.
The decision to provide benefits of all government schemes to the forest rights holders in the state was taken in the cabinet meeting and as part of it, an awareness campaign will be carried out among forest rights holders about the government schemes they are eligible for.
The state cabinet approved the unconditional government guarantee for a loan of Rs 24,000 crore to be raised by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) which has been in the process to develop a major big ticket transport infrastructure projects including metro projects, Borivali-Thane tunnel, Thane Coastal road, Sewri Worli connector and Orange Gate to Marine Drive underground tunnel project.
