(File photo) Five persons were injured after two groups from different communities clashed near a temple in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district on Sunday afternoon, the police said. According to the police, the incident occurred around 3.30 pm on Sunday.
“There is a temple in Supreme Colony at Jalgaon. The land belongs to the municipality. However, people belonging to one community were repairing a platform in and around the temple, while the other group believed the former were increasing the length (of the platform) to occupy more land, so they went there to oppose the construction,” a police officer said, requesting anonymity.
After an altercation, the two groups allegedly started pelting stones at each other. More than 250 people gathered at the spot, the police said. Riot action force, along with additional police forces, were dispatched to the spot and the situation was brought under control. Five persons, who sustained injuries in the incident, are out of danger, a police officer said.
The police said a case of attempt to murder and rioting was registered at MIDC police station in Jalgaon, but no one has been arrested yet. The police added they were trying to identify the suspects and arrest them.
Police inspector Baban Awhad said, “We are currently identifying the suspects from the videos of the incident shot by onlookers and police personnel. We are also scrutinising CCTV footage. We will verify their identity and subsequently arrest them.
