Clouds continue to keep the city cool

Days after the cyclonic storm Laila weakened considerably, clouds continued to hover over Mumbai on Saturday and Sunday, bringing occasional respite from the month’s unhindered heat.

Officials of the India Meteorological Department,Mumbai, said that the cloud formation is an upshot of high temperatures coupled with increasing moisture in the atmosphere.

On Saturday at 5.30 pm,maximum temperatures in the city was recorded at 35.9 in Colaba and 34.5 °C in Santacruz, nearly two degrees above the day’s normal of 33. Night temperatures also soared at 29.3 and 29.4°C in the two stations and the relative humidity was 75 per cent.

“Cloud cover is caused because temperatures are high and the moisture gradient is increasing in the city. However,we haven’t noticed significant thunder cloud activity over Mumbai so far. Sporadic showers and drizzles may occur in some places,” K Satidevi, director of IMD,Mumbai, said. She added that thundershower caused due to clouding is common in this season especially in the interiors of Maharashtra.

Over the past week, rainfall activities were reported from the south Konkan-Goa strip as well as inland Maharashtra, she said.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, has made considerable progress and covered most of the Bay of Bengal Sea,IMD officials said. “At this pace, there are chances of the monsoon currents hitting Kerala coast a few days earlier than the predicted date of May 30,” Satidevi stated.
