Mumbai gets a new venue for screening of documentaries and shorts.

IN accordance with the Cinematograph Act,1952,every film screening at a cinema hall is to be preceded by a 20-minute documentary. However, this tradition is no longer followed. The Indian Documentary Producers Association (IDPA) attempted to revive but didn’t succeed.

Recently,IDPA received communication from the office of Maharashtra’s Minister of Environment & Culture,Sanjay Deotale, urging them to launch a programme that will showcase short and documentary films. “The ministry offered us PL Deshpande Mini Auditorium at the Kala Academy in Prabhadevi as the venue,” says Sanskar Desai, general secretary,IDPA. They have opted for 10am to 1pm slot every Sunday. The auditorium allows seating for up to 200 people and the entry is free. On occasions, filmmakers are present for a discussion following the screening.

The initiative started on May 5 with the first edition being curated as Bollywood Bonanza in celebration of Indian cinema’s centenary. Three documentaries — The King Of Romance,Shammi Kapoor and Music Composer Ravi & His Last Composition by Suresh Sharma and The Saroj Khan Story by Nidhi Tuli — were screened.
