The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) Railway Station redevelopment project will transform 4.61 lakh square metre of space, the authorities have claimed.
The initiative includes refurbishing existing structures, enhancing circulation areas and creating new landscaping features. The revamped CSMT will stand as an iconic smart station, equipped with a modern Building Management System that integrates CCTV and other critical systems, the authorities have promised.
The redevelopment plan aims to integrate various modes of transportation, making the station a key multimodal transport hub. Additionally, a spacious rooftop plaza will offer a range of passenger amenities. At present, the CSMT is one of the country’s busiest stations, serving approximately 16 lakh passengers daily.
Cost of project: Rs 2,450 crore
Contractor: M/s. Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Limited, New Delhi.

Project will be done under hybrid annuity model
Project completion deadline: Four years
Foundation stone laid: January 19, 2023
Current Status: Work has started, various types of surveys, such as utility survey, drone survey etc, have been done, barricading completed at work site, support activity started.

· The CSMT will be transformed into a city centre rail mall, offering a wide range of daily necessities for passengers.
· It will facilitate seamless integration between different modes of transportation, with a focus on enhancing last-mile connectivity like rental bicycles, metro stations etc.
· Green building concepts, emphasizing sustainability.
· The CSMT will feature a modern Building Management System integrated with CCTV and other systems, enhancing security and efficiency.
· Spacious rooftop plaza with passenger amenities, retail spaces, cafeterias, and recreational facilities.
· Food court, waiting lounge, children’s play area, and space for the sale of local products.
· The redeveloped station will be ‘divyang’ friendly, improving passenger services, and ensuring energy efficiency.
· Restoration of the heritage site will be a key aspect of the redevelopment plan.
What officials say
The Chief Public Relation Officer of the Mumbai Division of the Central Railway, Swapnil Nila, said, “Efforts are being taken by the railways to preserve the heritage value of the building while creating a passenger friendly and modern railway station. This will provide a wholesale and pleasant experience to all the passengers.”
