Changing City: Mumbai Metro’s largest Metro depot coming up in Mandale, to hold 72 rakes
The depot will be equipped with a simulator, on the lines of aircraft simulators, which will offer training to Metro train pilots and operators through real-time simulation.

Mumbai’s first elevated and largest Metro depot is coming up at Mandale to park 72 Metro rakes. This depot will serve the 23.6-km elevated Metro Line 2B from DN Nagar to Mandale in Mankhurd, connecting Mumbai’s western suburbs with the city’s eastern corner.
Currently, Mumbai has two metro depots in service – one for Lines 2B and 7 in Charkop, having a facility for 22 rakes, and one for Metro Line 1 (Versova-Ghatkopar) in Andheri.
Introduction to Mandale depot
The under-construction Mandale depot spread over 32 hectares of land will have two levels — ground plus first floor that can accommodate 72 rakes. Apart from stabling lines, the depot will also have technical and service buildings to monitor the operations of the Metro line. As per the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), project implementing authority, major civil work has been attained in the depot construction.

Challenges:
- Elevated depot constructed due to less land space to accommodate 72 rakes.
2. Marshy land.
3. Access road for heavy vehicles not available. New bitumen road constructed by clearing encroachments of hutments and slums.
4. Infringement of nullah for construction of stabling lines, electric cables and toilet block of the BMC.

Stabling yard phase II: 75 per cent of the slab and beam casting is completed.
Coach unloading platform: 100% of the track linking is finished.
Simulator building: The ground floor and first floor of the simulator building have been handed over to the MMRDA systems team for the installation of simulators.
DCC building: 97% of the RCC work is completed.
Cost: Over Rs 500 crore
Contractor: Ahluwalia Contracts
Work awarded: In 2020
