On May 28,he was again tested positive in Trombay area, for which he was fined Rs 1600 and sentenced to one days imprisonment. Later,on August 27 last year,he was caught for drunk driving in Trombay for which he was sentenced to six days imprisonment, fined Rs 3,000 and his licence was permanently cancelled.
According to Baijal, even after the verdict was given by the court on February 26,Sharma sought some time for filing an appeal in the sessions court. Since he failed to file an appeal within the stipulated time,he had to surrender in Kurla Court on Wednesday and was sentenced to six days in Thane jail.
In another case on Wednesday, one Mehboob Jaffer Shaikh,an owner-cum-driver of a water tanker, was caught and tested positive in Trombay area for drunk driving. Shaikh was produced in court on Thursday and was sentenced to four days imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 2,000 and suspension of his driving licence for six months. The court ordered that his permit be suspended for two months and till this period is over, the tanker will be in the custody of the Traffic Police.
Baijal said,The order to confiscate the tanker was important because in many cases it was found that even after the registration of the vehicle was suspended, the owner of the tanker would start driving the tanker. We have made an appeal to the fleet owners of trucks, tempos, and buses to verify their drivers before handing over the possession of their vehicles to them.
