Five men,all in their 20s,were killed after their Santro collided with a garbage truck in Kalwa Monday.

Police said the accident occurred at Kalwa toll naka in Kharegaon around 4.30 am. Narendra Bukka (28),who was driving the Santro,and his friends Prashant Kamble (24),Rohit Yengati (24),Suresh Dahire (25) and Vinod Valmiki (25) were on their way to Mumbai when their vehicle lost control,said a Kalwa police officer.

“The road was slippery due to heavy rain. Eyewitnesses told us that the car was going at a considerable speed. The driver lost control and the car hit a garbage truck parked by the roadside. The front of the car was stuck beneath the truck’s undercarriage,” said an officer.

Eyewitnesses rushed to help the men and informed the police control room. The victims were removed from the mangled remains of the car and taken to Thane Civil Hospital,where they were declared dead before admission,police said.

“We have booked Bukka posthumously for causing death due to rash and negligent driving,” said sub-inspector P T Kale.

The five had studied in school together,and were residents of Ambernath-Badlapur area,police said. They left home early Monday,telling their families that they would be late,an officer said. Not much was known about their destination,the officer added.

Yengati worked as a public relations officer at a hospital in Kalyan,while Valmiki was employed with a call centre in Mumbai. Bukka assisted his brother in his construction business. Kamble and Dahire were working at private firms in Thane district,police said.
