A 25-year-old businessman driving a red Ferrari was intercepted and arrested by the police in the early hours of Sunday for speeding.
The Ferrari also caught the attention of Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria, who stopped at the spot while returning home from a function. The high-end sports car has been seized by Worli police.
The arrested person has been identified as John Postale, a resident of Pedder Road.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Vinayak Deshmukh, a nakabandi was enforced near Atria Mall at Worli between 2.15 am and 3.15 am. Deshmukh said around 2.30 am, a Ferrari, going at high speed on south-bound road towards Haji Ali, was trying to evade the nakabandi. The vehicle was intercepted by police.
“A friend of Postale was also present in the vehicle at the time of the incident, said Deshmukh. “Postale was booked and arrested under section 279 of the Indian Penal Code for rash driving. He was later released on bail. He was not drunk at the time,” Deshmukh added.
Police said Maria, who was also travelling towards the south side, saw the car, made a few inquiries and left.
On March 7 last year, the very same Ferrari was intercepted by Worli police along with a Lamborghini for racing on the Worli seaface. Sub-inspector Anant Raorane had been suspended for negligence as the owners of the cars were not arrested, said DCP Deshmukh.
“The driver did not have any papers related to the vehicle when it was intercepted. Thus, the vehicle was seized,” said a police officer. The vehicle would be released once all the relevant documents are furnished, he added.
