After a road caved in near the Magathane metro station, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has got an FIR registered against Chandak Builder, whose excavation work allegedly led soil adjacent to a storm-water drain chamber to collapse, damaging the chamber wall.

Videos from the cave-in site went viral on social media. The builder was issued a stop-work notice.

According to the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited, the chamber of the storm-water drain near the station’s Entry/Exit 2 is in close proximity to the foundation of the stairs and the escalator. Because of the deep excavation carried out by the builder near the drain chamber, its wall was damaged. This led to storm water flowing into the excavation area, posing a potential risk of further collapse to the drain chamber and the foundation of the stairs and the escalator, officials said.

The corporation inspected the road cave-in site with the BMC and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority on Wednesday.

“A prompt response to the situation is vital to prevent further damage. We are working closely with the BMC and the builder to implement remedial measures and ensure the safety and stability of the storm-water drain chamber, as well as the foundation of the stairs and escalator at the Magathane station,” said Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, chairman and managing director of the corporation.

The BMC is repairing the storm-water drain chamber to prevent further water flow into the excavation area, officials said, adding that the onus to backfill the entire stretch to create a natural slope and enhance stability, thereby mitigating the risk of further collapse, lay with Chandak Builder.
