In a bid to ensure that the roads and public spaces in Mumbai are free from open dumping, the civic body on June 7, launched a whatsapp helpline number - 8169681697, through which Mumbaikars can lodge complaints through whatsapp.

Two weeks after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a whatsapp hot-line to address citizen’s complaints related to solid waste and debris, the civic body’s data showed that they have recorded 2,167 complaints until June 21.
In a bid to ensure that the roads and public spaces in Mumbai are free from open dumping, the civic body on June 7, launched a whatsapp helpline number – 8169681697, through which Mumbaikars can lodge complaints through whatsapp. The civic body partnered with Meta for setting up this service and through this whatsapp number, complainants are able to Geo-tag a location along with pictures of garbage piled at that particular spot.
Civic officials said that all the complaints are being addressed within an eight hour window and after the garbage is cleared, a picture of that spot is shared with the complainant.
The civic body’s data states that between June 7 and 21, the BMC recorded 1,546 complaints related to garbage dumping, out of which 1,543 have been resolved, and three are being addressed. Besides this, 636 complaints related to dumping of construction debris were recorded by BMC, out of which 621 were resolved and 15 are under process.
“There are lanes and minor roads that are not frequented by our sanitation workers. These places don’t have garbage bins due to which people would come and dump garbage haphazardly on the roads. This would cause severe inconvenience to residents, who are now identifying the issue and we are solving it immediately,” said an official of Solid Waste Management (SWM) department.
Meanwhile, The BMC has a target of making Mumbai a waste-bin free by the end of 2030. Under this drive, all the waste will be segregated at the source and the BMC’s vans will only collect waste with an aim to recycle them.
