BMC razes unauthorised structures at three establishments in Kamala Mills

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday razed unauthorised structures at three establishments at Lower Parel’s Kamala Mills, while the health department initiated seizure action against two upscale eateries for violations.

Conducted by the fire compliance cell at G/South ward, the civic body on Thursday launched an inspection within the Kamala Mills compound as a part of its ongoing drive to ensure compliance with fire safety and building regulations.

Over the past five years, Kamala Mills — a space housing several commercial offices and more than 30 upscale eateries — has witnessed at least three major fire incidents in what has sparked safety concerns in the precinct.

The most recent fire was reported in September 2024 when a level II fire erupted at the 15–storey tower situated with the Kamala Mills compound.

At least seven establishments were inspected on Thursday which included outlets of Theobroma restaurant, McDonald’s, Shivsagar Hotel, Nonna’s cafe, Starbucks, Bira Taproom and Food by Devika (Toast Pasta Bar).

Following the drive, the civic body’s building and factory department demolished several unauthorised structures across three establishments.

Among the structures razed included an unauthorised compound wall erected at BKT house which was impacting the layout road exit.

Meanwhile, the civic body also demolished an unauthorised fence at Bira Taproom as well as unauthorised shed and fence at Toast Pasta Cafe.

Meanwhile, the health department also initiated seizure action against the two eateries, Taproom and Food by Devika.

According to officials, the enforcement action was primarily carried out owing to violations of license conditions such as illegal use of open spaces.
