WITH PLANS afoot for a groundbreaking ceremony soon for the Bal Thackeray Memorial at Shivaji Park, the Shiv Sena-led BMC on Tuesday handed over the former mayoral bungalow to the Bal Thackeray Memorial Trust.

According to municipal officials, the BMC had recently prepared agreement documents and formally given the same to the PWD.

A source in the BMC said that Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray wants to conduct a bhoomi pujan on November 17 — the death anniversary of Sena’s founder.

The bungalow is a Grade II-B heritage structure and therefore, no major alterations will be made to the structure.

The BMC had bought the bungalow in 1962 and since used it as the Mumbai mayor’s official residence.

Recently, a meeting was held between the Sena chief and Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta to discuss the handover process. Mumbai Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar will soon move to a vacant bungalow on the Byculla Zoo premises.
