BMC finalises project management consultants for proposed STPs at Versova and Ghatkopar

“The PMC will prepare tender documents and keep a check on all the work executed by the contractor for the work. The consultants will help the civic body to set up advance treatment plant so that the pollution of the (Arabian) sea can be minimised,” an official from MSDP department said. The PMC for Malad STP will also be finalised soon, the official said.

Under MSDP-II, which has been at the planning stage for more than 15 years, the civic body will spend more than Rs 17,000 crore to upgrade STPs at Worli, Dharavi, Versova, Ghatkopar, Malad, Bandra and Bhandup with a capacity of recycling around 1,700 million litres of water daily.

Earlier, the civic body had to revise its tender plans for construction of the STPs after an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on effluent discharge norms. This, in turn, had led to the revision of the whole process of appointing contractors for STPs.

According to sources, the BMC had continued with norms set by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF) notification under which Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) of 20 mg/l was allowed for effluent discharge. However, after a petition was filed by a Pune-based activist in the NGT against the norms set by ministry, the tendering process for BMC’s ambitious plan to set up upgraded STPs at seven locations was stayed.

The NGT directed the civic body to follow BOD of 10mg/l for effluent discharge, which allows the treated sewage to be reused for non-potable purposes.
