BMC directs contractors, stakeholders to strengthen RMC supply chain for road concretisation

In the past, several contractors have flagged concerns over the delay in the ongoing works owing to the distance between the RMC plants and worksite.

In a bid to accelerate ongoing concretisation works, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed road work contractors and other stakeholders to strengthen the supply chain of Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) through deployment of additional vehicles amongst other measures. The directives were issued Wednesday, following a surprise visit conducted by top civic brass on worksites during the late hours.

Late Tuesday night, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar conducted a surprise visit to a road worksite along Sion’s Road number 28 in F North ward, followed by another inspection at an RMC plant situated in Bandra Kurla Complex.

During the visit to the RMC plant, which also saw the presence of IIT Bombay representatives, the BMC officials inspected control rooms, cleanliness of the water tank used for preparing the mixture, automatic systems, stock of gravel alongside other materials used for the RMC mix. With the RMC sites providing ready mix used on road concreting sites, Bangar called for an increase in the fleet size of vehicles carrying the finished mixture from the RMC plant to the worksite to reduce the turnaround time of these vehicles and increase the pace of works.

In the past, several contractors have flagged concerns over the delay in the ongoing works owing to the distance between the RMC plants and worksite. “On highways we can set up our own casting yard, Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plant at the spot itself. However in Mumbai it’s not possible. Considering there are residential zones nearby, we have to set up these plants in the outskirts and transferring them to the site takes longer than usual,” a spokesperson from one contractual agency told The Indian Express.

Meanwhile, during his visit to the Sion site, Bangar directed officials to ensure coordination with the water department, in a bid to ensure that water lines are laid without hampering the ongoing road works.

Under the ambit of the mega concretisation project, the BMC has taken up the concreting works of nearly 702 kilometres of road length across the city. Of these, nearly 525 kilometres of road lengths are dug up at present with the BMC eyeing to complete all dug up roads by May 31, 2025.
