BMC asks to take down all unauthorised hoardings, to take strict action

The civic body said that display of political as well as non-political advertisement boards are only permitted in the space allotted by the BMC. These permitted pockets include 1,017 boards, 2,311 bus stops and 32,531 kiosks.  

In its ongoing drive against unauthorised display of banners, boards and posters across the city, the BMC has written to officials and representatives of political parties, social organisations and businesses calling them to all remove billboards and banners which have been installed without permission.

On Thursday, the civic body said that strict action is being initiated against those who are displaying banners, boards, posters without permission in public places. The civic body said that display of political as well as non-political advertisement boards are only permitted in the space allotted by the BMC. These permitted pockets include 1,017 boards, 2,311 bus stops and 32,531 kiosks.

In light of the directives from the High Court, the BMC has prohibited display of any hoarding, banner and poster along swathes and footpaths in the city without the prior permission of the civic authority. The BMC is empowered to take legal action against the provision of the ‘Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act-1995’ as well as sections of the Mumbai Municipal Act 1888.

Despite the eviction drive, display of unauthorised hoardings remain rampant in the city prompting the civic body to now write letters to the political parties, social organisations, businesses etc. DMC (Special), Chanda Jadhav on Thursday said that the action has been initiated as per HC orders. In its letter, the BMC has appealed to violators to ensure no billboards, banners and posters are displayed without permissions. DMC (Special) conducted a meeting with officials across the 24 wards, instructing them to initiate a strict eviction drive against the unlicensed hoardings.

The BMC has appealed citizens to flag any unauthorised boards on the toll-free number 1916.
