BJP keen on greater coordination with allies Sena, NCP during Maharashtra Assembly polls
In the 2024 Assembly polls, the BJP will have to accommodate its allies Shiv Sena of CM Shinde and Ajit Pawar's NCP to retain the turf, given the sharp polarisation on caste lines in the Lok Sabha polls.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has taken a formal decision to continue its pre-poll alliance with Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and NCP led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in the forthcoming Assembly elections in the state. The decision was arrived at the party’s core committee meeting in Mumbai in the presence of the newly appointed state in charge and Union Minister Bhupendra Yadav and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
While emphasising micro planning constituency-wise, the message to the state unit was to ensure greater coordination with the alliance partners to ensure a united front in the Assembly polls.
“The decision is significant in the wake of growing differences within the Mahayuti comprising BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. After the Lok Sabha poll setback, a sizeable section within the BJP blamed Ajit Pawar’s NCP for the failure. Shinde’s Shiv Sena held the BJP responsible for the low scores citing their interference and delay in decision making in seat division and candidate selection. Although Shinde, Fadnavis, and Ajit Pawar have put up a united front, second-rung leaders and poll strategists in all three ruling parties have been accusing each other of the poor performance in Lok Sabha,” said a source.
In 2019 Assembly polls, the BJP won 105 seats out of 288 seats. It was then in alliance with undivided Shiv Sena. In the 2024 Assembly polls, the BJP will have to accommodate its allies Shiv Sena of CM Shinde and Ajit Pawar’s NCP to retain the turf, given the sharp polarisation on caste lines in the Lok Sabha polls. The dalits, Marathas and Muslim consolidation has gone against BJP. Its core OBC base has also taken a beating.
State BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule said, “The party has convened a two-day conclave in Pune on July 13 and 14. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will address the conclave which will have more than 4,000 delegates.”
The party has also decided to launch a massive campaign across 288 constituencies to appraise people about the welfare schemes launched by the state government in its annual budget.
