Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, the Maharashtra BJP has stressed the need for better coordination with its alliance partners, the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the NCP faction led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.
A highly placed source in the BJP said, “Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged the party to make concerted efforts to overcome differences with alliance partners. He emphasised the need to project a united ruling front.”
At a meeting on Friday, Fadnavis along with state BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule gave an audience to individual MLAs and MPs. The purpose of the interaction was to review the preparations and assess the performance of the legislators in the last four years.
The BJP, with 105 MLAs, is the largest party in the state. In the 2024 elections, the BJP will contest with the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) and the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction). Although top leaders are reconciled to the adjustment, pulls and pressures between the three partners at the constituency level is a reality.
“Fadnavis urged the party MLAs, MPSs and office-bearers to take the initiative to resolve the discords amicably,” a BJP insider said.
The state BJP reckons it has a daunting task ahead in the coming polls. The party has been told to ensure it reaches each and every seat, a target that would require double efforts. It has already planned “Mission 48”. “We are working to win 48 out of the 48 Lok Sabha seats. In the Assembly the target is 230 plus of the 288 seats,” Bawankule said.
