A routine nakabandi by the Bhoiwada police on Tuesday evening led to the arrest of four persons, including a minor, who were fleeing after allegedly robbing and murdering two old women,Krishnabai Gawde (58) and Pramila Gawde (56),in a flat in the Mitradham society at Parel.
The accused were identified as Rohan Gaikar (24),Deepak Talawdekar (29),Kiran Sanchate (21) and a 16-year-old boy.
DCP Zone (IV) Sanjay Baviskar said,Rohan Gaikar, the prime accused in the case, had worked as a driver for the Gawde family till January when he left the job for better prospects. On Tuesday evening,he along with the other three co-accused entered the flat where the two sisters used to stay with their brother Keshav and stabbed them somewhere between 5.15 pm and 5.45 pm. Gaikar, who had worked for the family knew that the two women would be alone in the flat. The accused then fled in a taxi after taking along valuables worth Rs 1.02 lakh.
The taxi in which the four accused were travelling was flagged down by police officials who were conducting nakabandi at Shindewadi at around 5.55 pm. The occupants of the taxi seemed too nervous at the sight of our police team and this raised our suspicions. Moreover, some of them had blood-stains on their clothes and we asked them to step out of the cab. After frisking them,we found a chopper with one of them and valuables. When they were questioned about it,they had no convincing reply, said a police official who was part of the nakabandi team.
The Bhoiwada police officials, who were till then still unaware of the murder, took them to the police station. While checking the valuables that the accused were carrying, the cops saw two names engraved on a memento. The accused, all residents of Sion area, had stolen the memento assuming it to be made of gold, besides stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 1.02 lakh. Considering the names engraved on the memento, the police linked the murder of the two elderly sisters to the four accused.
After hours of interrogation, the duo finally told the police about the two old women that they had robbed and murdered. By then,Keshav, who was repeatedly trying to call his sisters without any success, had come home and discovered the bodies of Krishnabai and Pramila, said the official.
