Illegal encroachments on tribal land razed in Bhiwandi

The plight of the aggrieved tribals were brought to the attention of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis by the Shramajivi Sanghatana, an organisation dedicated to tribal welfare.

The Thane district administration on Monday conducted a demolition drive at Rahuri village in Bhiwandi taluka to raze illegal structures from land allotted to tribals and handed over the land to the tribals.

Abhijeet Khole, the tehsildar of Bhiwandi Taluka, Thane said, “The land belonging to tribals at Rahuri village in Padgha was grabbed and structures were erected there illegally. The administration on Monday razed those structures and gave possession of the land to 17 tribals. The remaining 6 tribal land owners will be searched and action will be taken soon to remove the illegal constructions on that land”.

According to the administration, the state government had allocated 80 acres of land to 23 landless tribals in the village in 1978. However, over the years, land sharks illegally grabbed the land, building bungalows, farmhouses, and lakes, depriving the tribals of their rightful ownership of said land.

The plight of the aggrieved tribals were brought to the attention of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis by the Shramajivi Sanghatana, an organisation dedicated to tribal welfare. Vivek Pandit, the founder of the Sanghatana and Chairman of the state committee on tribal welfare had held numerous meetings with government officials and Fadnavis to address the issue.

Responding to the concerns raised by the tribals, Fadnavis had directed the district administration to verify land ownership details and restore the land to the tribal farmers.

Acting on the Deputy Chief Minister’s directives, the district administration, identified the encroached land and the demolition drive carried out under heavy police presence, saw the removal of illegal constructions.

Tehsildar Kolhe revealed that 16 out of the 23 plots had been identified and cleared of construction, with action ongoing for the remaining plots.
