BEST’s last iconic double-decker non-AC bus bids goodbye

As per RTO rules, buses in service for 15 years have to be scrapped and, therefore, the last non-AC double-decker bus, after completing 15 years of service, was retired on Friday.

The last iconic double-decker non-air-conditioned bus of BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) undertaking bid goodbye on Friday. The double-decker bus made trips till 9:30 pm between Agarkar Chowk and SEEPZ, Andheri East.

Hundreds of commuters took rides in the bus on Friday to cherish the experience for one last time in the iconic double-decker, which served office-goers, students, senior citizens and residents, among others, over the years.

Rupesh Sheletkar, president of Aapli BEST Aaplyachsathi, a group of like-minded people, said they celebrated the occasion at Andheri. They cut a cake and decorated the bus with flowers and balloons to mark the special occasion.

Sheletkar said that they have urged the BEST administration to preserve the iconic us at its Arnik bus museum in Sion for future generations to have a glimpse of it.

Meanwhile, BEST assured that it will not discontinue double-decker bus services. It has 16 AC double-decker buses and more buses will be added to the fleet. An additional 20 open double-decker buses, used for Mumbai Darshan, will also be purchased. The last non-AC open double-decker bus will be discontinued from service in October.
