A forgotten ATM card,an observant watchman and a bitter bank employee awaiting his promotion— all served as ingredients for a cheating-cum-theft case that was cracked by the Dadar police on Friday.

A forgotten ATM card,an observant watchman and a bitter bank employee awaiting his promotion— all served as ingredients for a cheating-cum-theft case that was cracked by the Dadar police on Friday.

The police arrested 38-year-old Pravin Bagade, who is employed as an ATM currency auditor with a prominent bank for misusing an ATM card. A security guard guarding an ATM outlet in Dadar had used the abandoned card to withdraw money and upon being spotted by Bagade,he had handed it over to him out of fear. Incidentally, the ATM belongs to the same bank that Bagade works for.

“On May 4,Yatin Petnekar had gone to the ATM outlet to withdraw money but had forgotten his card in the machine. The security guard outside the outlet spotted the card and immediately went inside on the pretext of checking the machine and withdrew Rs 2,000 using the card. However,Bagade who was standing in a queue outside the outlet, spotted the security guard and upon confrontation, the guard handed over the card to Bagade,” said police sub-inspector Ramchandra Tanawade of the Dadar police station.

Bagade had then used the card to buy a laptop worth Rs 21,200 from a shopping centre in Dadar. Meanwhile,Petnekar found his card missing and registered a complaint with the Dadar police.

“After procuring Petnekar’s account details from his bank,we traced the transaction to the shopping centre. There we perused the CCTV details and found a clipping of Bagade buying the laptop. Using his photo derived from the footage,we traced him to his house in Kamgar Nagar. We arrested him on Friday for cheating and theft,” said police inspector Dharia of Dadar police station.

During interrogation,Bagade revealed that he worked as an ATM currency auditor for the same bank and was a regular visitor to the ATM.

“The guard recognised me as I was a regular at the ATM and asked me whether I had seen what he had done. I told him that I saw him withdrawing cash and that it looked suspicious. He then told me that he would give me the card. I am proficient at ATM banking and my work as auditor has earned me accolades from my superiors. However,I had been promised a promotion for my work but my seniors stole my credit and earned a promotion, whereas I am forced to live on a measly salary,” confessed Bagade.
