The blaze erupted in the flat located on the sixth floor of the Fortune Enclave building in Bandra (West) at around 1 am, a civic official said. (ANI/X)An 80-year-old woman was injured after a fire broke out inside a high-rise in Bandra West area of Mumbai early Tuesday. No casualties were reported as Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel rescued at least 13 people, from the building, officials said. Singer Shaan was among those who were stranded in the building.
According to senior officials, the incident was reported at 12.57 am on Tuesday at the Fortune Enclave building along the 14th Road in Bandra West. The blaze broke out on the seventh floor of the building. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the fire was confined to a flat on the sixth floor of the ground-plus-upper 15-storey building.
During the rescue operation, firemen found Sati Gopal Paryani (80) lying unconscious in a flat on the eighth floor of the building. Paryani was rushed to the civic-run Bhabha Hospital, where doctors said her condition was stable. Firefighters also rescued more than 13 people from the building. Officials said nine people — a man and eight women — were rescued from the 15th floor through the staircase, one woman from the second floor, and three others were rescued from the eighth floor.
Singer Shaan was among those rescued from the building. In a social media post, Shaan said, “Dear all, as the news spreads about the fire in our building… Just to let you all know that we are safe. Fire was on the 7th floor. We live on higher floors. We managed to escape to the 15th floor and waited to be rescued. To cut a long terrible story short… we are absolutely fine. Waiting to go back home once there is a clearer picture from the fire department.”
The blaze was extinguished at 3.20 pm, civic body officials said.
No functional fire fighting system, refuge area: Officials
A senior MFB official told The Indian Express that the building did not have a refuge area and that the fire fighting system was not in working condition.
“We will conduct a detailed investigation tomorrow (Wednesday) and determine the cause of the fire. Will also investigate the status of the fire fighting systems. A ward-level investigation report pertaining to the structural details will also be conducted,” added the official.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) deployed four fire engines alongside four jumbo tankers to extinguish the fire.
