US deports gangster Anmol Bishnoi, NIA to seek his custody from court

A senior official told The Indian Express that the process of deporting Anmol to India from the US had been completed and he was likely to land in Delhi soon.

A day after his asylum application was turned down by a Louisiana Court in the US, gangster Anmol Bishnoi, who is wanted as the main plotter in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique in October last year, is being deported from the US and scheduled to reach India around 10am on Wednesday, sources said on Tuesday. Anmol is the brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

A senior police officer said Anmol is being flown back in a chartered plane, along with two others who are wanted in Punjab. “Anmol had applied for asylum and his application was rejected on Monday. After this, orders were issued to deport him and Central agencies in India were informed about his arrival,” the officer said.

“Orders have been issued for deployment of multiple teams of Delhi Police at the IGI Airport. As per discussions so far, it has been decided that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will produce him in a court to get his custody,” the officer said.

Anmol has several cases pending against him across the country. The Central agencies are, however, focusing on his alleged role in the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in May 2022, NCP leader Baba Siddique’s killing last year, firing outside actor Salman Khan’s house, among others.

Baba Siddique’s son Zeeshan said he received an email, seen by The Indian Express, from US officials on Tuesday, informing him that “Anmol Bishnoi has been removed from the US by the federal government”.

“My e-mail is registered with the US authorities since I am from the victim’s family, and they would update me about any developments in the case. This morning, I received an email saying that Bishnoi has been removed from the US. I do not know what that means or where he has gone,” Zeeshan said. Baba Siddique was shot outside his Bandra office on October 12, 2024, and the Mumbai Police arrested 26 people after invoking  provisions of the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The police had named Anmol as the ‘plotter’ of the murder in the chargesheet. The police said they received several audio clips from the mobile phones of those arrested, which matched the voice of Anmol who is heard passing on instructions to carry out the murder.

In response to India’s request for Anmol’s extradition in January last year, the US Department of State had sought information about cases in which he had direct involvement, technical evidence against him, and financial details in March this year, four months after his arrest there.

“Anmol was arrested by the US immigration authorities in November 2024 for allegedly travelling with fake documents. After spending some time in a US prison, he came out on bail,” a source said.

Anmol fled to the US on May 15, 2022, on a fake passport issued in the name of one Bhanu. Last year, however, US Immigration Department found that one of the reference letters of a company, attached to his travel documents, was forged. A Red Corner Notice was issued against him on December 6, 2022. The NIA had named Anmol as an accused in two cases and announced a bounty of Rs 10 lakh. “There are 31 cases, including 22 in Rajasthan, and nine arrest warrants against Anmol. Lawrence gang has a criminal syndicate encompassing Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi. Anmol is among those believed to be managing the gang’s extortion operations,” an officer said.
