The Mumbai Traffic Police apprehended around 720 drivers for drunken driving on Thursday night.

Of them,170 drivers were produced before the special metropolitan magistrate. The court adjourned 522 cases till next date. A driver held for drunken driving for the second time was awarded two days’ simple imprisonment and fine of Rs 3,000. Driving licences of 157 were suspended for six months whereas those of three drivers were suspended for two years.

“We carried out the drive till 5 am on Friday. Almost all offenders were returning home after New Year parties,” a traffic police officer said. As per records,the traffic police registered around 14,681 cases of drunken driving in 2009. As many as 9,807 were sentenced to simple imprisonment under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Also,9,211 licences were suspended.
