Samajwadi Party leader from Mumbai,Abu Azmi,on Saturday met Governor S C Jamir with a youths family to complain about alleged pressure from and assault by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers. But the local police denied any political twist in the case.
Azmi led a delegation to the Governor and asked him to intervene in the complaint of assault on Anil Yadav,19,a resident of Worli,by his neighbour Anand Dhumal. Dhumal, claim SP workers,is a local MNS worker and has been targeting Yadav and his family.
According to the complaint,on March 11,while Yadav was descending the steps of his Gopal Nagar residence,Dhumal got into an argument which soon turned into fist-fight. Yadav was assaulted and injured. He had to be rushed to KEM hospital for treatment. He could barely give his HSC exam the next day.
Last year,MNS had started protesting against non-Marathis in the state, which later took a violent turn against Biharis and North Indians.
Officials of the Governors office confirmed that a delegation of SP leaders, along with a Worli family had met the Governor for about 20 minutes in the morning and explained to him the threat they were facing. The governor assured them that the state Home Minister would be directed to look into their complaint and ensure security to them, said the official.
Both Yadav and Dhumal have registered counter complaints at the Worli police station.
There are counter complaints registered by both the groups. They are neighbours in the locality and the fight started when they were walking down the stairs. There is no political angle to this dispute and the MNS has no role to play in this, said Bharat Worlikar, senior police inspector,Worli police station.
