Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Wednesday extended apology for tearing a poster carrying a photograph of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

Ahwad was protesting at Mahad’s Chavdar Lake, against the proposal to include Manusmriti reference in a chapter in the Maharashtra State Curriculum Framework, when he tore a poster carrying Ambedkar’s picture.

Awhad’s apology comes after the action drew sharp reactions from ruling BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP.

“We were protesting against the state government’s decision to include Manusmriti in the school curriculum by burning Manusmriti. During the protest, I was given a poster carrying photos of Manusmriti and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. I inadvertently tore the poster. I publicly apologise for my action,” said Awhad.

State BJP chief Chadrashekhar Bawankule condemned Awhad for his action saying the BJP will protest across the state on May 30.

“The BJP will teach befitting lesson to Awhad who dared to tear the poster of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar,” said Bawankule.

Spokesperson of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP Umesh Patil said that Awhad’s stunt will spoil the social environment of Maharashtra.

“Sharad Pawar should give an answer to Ambedkarites and tell them as to what action will be taken against Awhad,” he said.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Raju Waghmare demanded arrest of Awhad saying his actions are an insult of entire country.

“Apology extended by Jitendra Awhad is nothing but fakery. Maharashtra’s Education minister Deepak Kesarkar has already clarified that Manusmriti will not be included in school curriculum and there was no need to undertake such a stunt,” said Waghmare.

Meanwhile, Awhad maintained that he apologises for his action and expects that the Ambedkarites will forgive him.
