Rs 400-crore contract awarded to set up automated testing stations for vehicles
Managed through the Automated Fitness Management System (AFMS), these centres will enable citizens to book fitness test slots, access results, and download fitness certificates online.

The Maharashtra Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has awarded a contract worth Rs 400 crore to Rosmerta Technologies to set up 21 automated testing stations (ATS) across the state that will be operational within a year. The move is part of the state’s initiative to enhance vehicle fitness testing by setting up 41 such centres.
Managed through the Automated Fitness Management System (AFMS), these centres will enable citizens to book fitness test slots, access results, and download fitness certificates online. To maintain testing integrity, regular audits will be conducted every six months.
An RTO official said, “Poorly maintained vehicles pose both environmental and safety risks. Older vehicles, in particular, contribute significantly to air pollution as they lack advanced emission controls found in newer models that comply with stricter standards.”
The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, Section 56 mandates that transport vehicles must have a valid fitness certificate issued by prescribed authorities or ATS to remain registered. For non-transport vehicles, fitness certificates are required during the renewal of the registration certificate.
Rosmerta Technologies, which has done similar projects in Karnataka and other states, has tested over half a million vehicles across its operational centres. “By leveraging cutting-edge technology, we aim to provide vehicle owners and operators with assurance of compliance and contribute to road safety,” said Kartick Nagpal, president of Rosmerta Technologies.
