At CSIA,security agencies are not taking any chances

A week after intelligence inputs from central agencies warned of a possible terror strike, security at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport continues to be at an unprecedented high.

A week after intelligence inputs from central agencies warned of a possible terror strike, security at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) continues to be at an unprecedented high. Central agencies had warned of a strike being carried out using a small plane. The next input reportedly said an explosive laden trucks would be used to carry out the strike.

Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) sources have said the inputs have forced them to be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles or persons. Sources revealed that all security agencies at the airport have been told to maintain constant vigil and ensure that all suspicious persons or vehicles are monitored.

“We have been on high alert since we received the inputs. Security at CSIA and Delhi airport is always high as these are very important airports. However, the inputs have forced us to remain more vigilant here as we do not know when or in what form rogue elements may strike,” said a CISF source. The officer said all members of the CISF had been told to ensure that they remain at a heightened state of vigil.

“The inputs just warn us of a possible strike. It is our job to ensure that we are ready. The gravity of the strike is not known. This is why we have to be ready at all times to both respond to and also neutralise the threat in the event of a strike. Strikes are now sophisticated in nature and we have to be ready to respond if one takes place,” said the officer.

To ensure that security remains high, passengers will be frisked thoroughly, said the source. “We always frisk everyone coming to the airport. However, now the frisking will be even more strict,” said the officer.

Sources in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) said they had been instructed to be ready. “We are on high alert. We have been on a heightened state of alert since the inputs have come in. We cannot afford to take any chances. Our teams are ready and our officials have been told to be prepared,” said the BCAS source.

A spokesperson for the Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) confirmed that security at the airport has been beefed up. “Security at CSIA is always high. However, security has been beefed up now,” said the MIAL spokesperson.
