Asha Parekh Hospital reopens

After more than a year-and-a-half lockout, the Asha Parekh Hospital reopened for patients on Saturday.

After more than a year-and-a-half lockout, the Asha Parekh Hospital reopened for patients on Saturday. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan reopened the 110-bedded hospital in Santacruz, which was forced to shut down in December 2007 following a spat between the management and the employees union.

The veteran actor has promised Rs 11 lakh to the hospital. The hospital will restart functioning in phases, with the out-patient department and nearly 80 beds already been made operational. “As and when the occupancy increases,we will increase our bed capacity,” said Dr S M Shah, medical director.

The management had declared a lockout of Asha Parekh Hospital,a charitable hospital, following an assault on its legal consultant A Mulla, allegedly by members of the employees union. The staff,on the other hand, had alleged that the management was trying to sell the hospital land to build a mall.

A case was filed with the Charity Commissioner and police authorities and the negotiations came to a conclusion after the staff accepted the management’s offer of a retirement scheme. “We have offered a voluntary retirement scheme to the union workers and things are in order now. We are going to redefine healthcare with better facilities,” said Dr Shah.
