Several artistes have expressed solidarity with students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, who have been agitating against appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as chairperson of its governing council.
They have decided to use art as a platform to stand by students. Among them are Vasu Dixit of Bangalore-based indie band Swarathma who will perform on June 28 and Uday Benegal of Indus Creed on June 29. These artistes are not alumnus of FTII.
“Many artists expressed the wish to protest through art. We reached out to some others too. We have been working on the dates,” said Neel Manikant, a student of Film Direction at the institute.

The protests, on its 16th day, have seen participation of Dalit activist Sambhaji Bhagat last week. Documentary filmmaker R V Ramani filmed a part of the protests. Veteran actor Tom Alter had expressed solidarity while actor-writer Piyush Mishra is expected to confirm a date of performance.
“We discussed it and decided we should have our own language of protests, the language of art,” said Manikant. The demonstrations were marked by music, dance and painting. Students staged street plays and made short films, some of which are being uploaded on Facebook, FTII Wisdom Tree, with the hashtag #nocolour.
