Army jawans ransack police station, assault staff after officer is arrested

Over 100 jawans went on a rampage destroying property and also attacked policemen.

Army jawans from the Artillery Centre in Nashik allegedly ransacked a police station and assaulted the staff Wednesday after an officer was booked by the Nashik police on charges of “obstructing the police from discharging their duty”.

Over 100 jawans landed at the Upnagar police station and went on a rampage destroying property and also attacked policemen on Wednesday afternoon after after one of their colleagues was booked by the police on Tuesday night. The police station is headed by woman officer Namrata Desai.

Ashish Bagul, an officer undergoing training at the School of Artillery, had gone to the Upnagar police station Tuesday night to file a complaint.

He was accompanied by a friend and they had allegedly parked their vehicle in front of the police station gate. Bagul and the police allegedly got into an argument after a policeman asked him to move his vehicle. The police subsequently filed a case against Bagul and his accomplice for obstructing an officer on duty.

As per the procedure, a case was filed and Bagul was handed over to the Army authorities. This infuriated Army officers who decided to take matters into their own hands and ransacked the police station Wednesday. They locked the police station before leaving. A few police personnel were injured in the incident and were treated at the Civil Hospital.

The Nashik police have started filing cases against over 100 jawans and will be arresting them. “We have booked over a hundred people who were involved. They will be arrested and treated as per the provisions of the law,” said Nashik Police Commissioner Kulwant Sarangal. The Army authorities said they would issue a statement on Thursday.
