A fireman watches the fumes from Shangrila Heera Panna Mall in Andheri on Thursday. A pre-dawn fire had broken out in the basement,gutting it and spreading above.
The fire brigades main concern was for 11 persons who had taken shelter on the top (third) floor. They used a turntable ladder to rescue the group,mostly employees with a hotel and a clinic on the complex. No one was injured.
The team used 15 engines and seven water tankers. The malls firefighting systems werent working and a JCB machine was used to break into the basement. The fire took four hours to douse,said Uday Tatkare,chief fire officer.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but a short circuit is suspected. The basement was being used to store electronic goods,Tatkare said,adding this is illegal. The fire brigade will study the building papers and plans to serve a notice to the owner.
