All set for a secure New Year

Traffic cops to conduct drive against drink driving.

To ensure that the city does not witness any drink driving accidents while ushering in the New Year, the traffic police are going to conduct an anti-drink-and-drive campaign from 5pm on New Year’s Eve to 5am the following morning.

The traffic police will also prosecute the owners of bars from which the maximum number of drink drivers arrested are found to have consumed alcohol before taking the wheel during the New Year celebrations.

With more than 1,500 traffic policemen on the roads on the eve of the New Year, the police will come down heavily on those found behind the wheel in an inebriated condition.

Nandkumar Chaugule,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic),said traffic policemen will be posted at 75 spots across the city, and will be armed with 150 breathalysers.

Last year, the traffic police had arrested 720 drivers for drink driving,of whom 522 were two-wheeler riders.

On Friday evening, the traffic police started a weeklong Safe Celebration Campaign. The police have given notices to the owners of bars, clubs and lounges in the city to ensure that their patrons refrain from driving after drinking.

“The bar owners should post a few men in their parking lots to check on people and alert us if they are taking the wheel after consuming alcohol. If we find more patrons from a particular bar or club driving after drinking,we will take action and get their licenses seized,” said Brijesh Singh,Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
