A motorcycle-borne couple allegedly snatched a mangalsutra from a woman and fled on Thursday night. However, the victims husband boarded a taxi and chased the duo in filmi style, and eventually managed to retrieve the mangalsutra.
The woman was caught but her accomplice fled on the bike.
The Kalachowkie police filed a case of robbery against the nabbed woman and said the two accused were husband and wife, and have been snatching necklaces of women.
The man who retrieved his wifes mangalsutra,58-year-old Suryakant Bhaat,a retired BEST employee, said,My wife and I were returning home at around 9.30 in the night. At Sane Guruji Marg,Lalbaug,a man riding a bike with a woman on the pillion slowed down near my wife. The man then snatched her mangalsutra and sped away. I was a few paces behind her. I ran behind the bike. Owing to construction on the road the traffic was moving slowly, and I could still see the bike at a distance. I reached a local political party office and some party workers told me to board a taxi and chase the bike.
The bike that was slowing near a traffic signal almost hit a pedestrian. The rider lost his balance fell along with the pillion rider. The pedestrian hurriedly grasped the duo,but while the man got on the bike and fled away, the woman was nabbed by Bhaat who reached there in a taxi.
We arrested the 20-year-old Aruna Maru. We are on the lookout for her husband Hasmukh. There have been several instances of chain-snatching in the area. Just last week,we arrested another man-woman duo robbing pedestrians in a similar manner. They were cousins hailing from the same area in Tardeo where this couple is from, said police sub-inspector Sanjay Walke investigating the case.
