Additional buses to help stranded commuters

With train services disrupted between Ghatkopar and Thane sections for an unprecedented 30 hours,the bus transport bodies in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region are plying additional buses to cater to the stranded passengers.

According to Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking spokesperson AS Tamboli,buses were pressed into service from Wadala,Ghatkopar and Sion to Mulund and Thane. “As many as 178 additional buses have been put to service from Wadala,Sion and Ghatkopar to Thane via different routes for clearance of passengers. And if needed,more buses will be added. The services will continue till the rail services resume.”

BEST traffic officers and inspectors have also been posted at stations like Thane and Ghatkopar to help and guide passengers about buses.

The section between CST and Ghatkopar and from Thane and beyond was operational. Office-goers,mostly residing at Thane and beyond,had a difficult time returning back as the train service between Ghatkopar and Thane was suspended. The Central Railway had allowed commuters to take a harbour line train so that they could take a Thane-Vashi train from Vashi. The Western Railway had also permitted commuters to use their services till Borivali.

“From Borivali,there are many bus services that can take them to Thane,” said WR chief spokesperson S S Gupta.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation has started 200 extra buses for commuters. “We have started extra buses on the Mumbai-Thane,Mumbai-Kalyan and Mumbai-Bhiwandi routes. Five special buses will run on the Mumbai-Mantralaya route,” said MSRTC spokesperson Mukund Dhus.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT) has also started additional bus services from Mulund to Kalyan.
