Traffic on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is down by 2000 vehicles a day and the toll collection agency reads a link with the number of recent accidents on the landmark.
The current usage is 36,000-38,000 vehicles a day, half the initial target of 70,000. Revenues were already Rs 3-4 lakh below the target and,Mumbai Entry Point Ltd managing director Jayant Mhaiskar said,After the accidents began, revenue has dropped around Rs 1 lakh everyday.
The accidents have mostly been head-on collisions as the four-lane carriageway is divided for northbound and southbound traffic. Mhaiskar is hopeful traffic will pick up and accidents go down once the north carriageway opens.
Revenue has risen somewhat after BEST buses started using the sea link and the agency is contemplating a toll hike by July. The hike would be around six to eight per cent and likely to come into effect by July as per the 2003 government notification, Mhaiskar said.
The revised basic toll would be Rs 60,the return fare Rs 90 instead of Rs 75; the daily pass for multiple entries would be Rs 150 and the monthly pass Rs 3,000 instead of Rs 2,500.
