An 8-ft deep and 10-inch wide crack developed on the concrete road at Zacharia Bunder Marg in Sewree on Tuesday raising concerns of a likely road cave-in. This seems to have occured due to soil erosion as a result of a leaking pipeline below the road, said H A Kale,assistant municipal commissioner.
The cavity on that part of the road is about 7-8 ft deep,3-4 inches long and 10 inches wide, said an official. There is a stormwater drain and a 48-inch main water pipeline below the road which supplies water to many parts of south Mumbai, said Kale.
Although the crack did not cause major traffic disruption or casualties,it is a big concern,said officials.
After preliminary investigations,we found that the part below the road has become hollow and over a period of time it could lead to a road cave-in, said a senior official.
The storm water drain below the road does not seem to be the cause of the crack, said Kale. The slab above the water pipeline is being taken out,only then we can ascertain what caused the crack, he added.
As a result of damaged underground utilities,last week,a portion of a newly relaid road caved in near Five Gardens in Matunga. A 3.3-ft deep and 3.3-ft wide cavity was formed on Adenwala road,minutes after a Best bus passed by.
According to officials,the water from a damaged drain had seeped through and weakened the base of the road. In July,an underground storm water drain gave way causing a 20 ft deep hole in Worli. The number of road cave-ins in the past two years has touched 12 .
