An 89-year-old woman passenger died onboard an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Varanasi, which then made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s Chikalthana Airport Sunday.
The incident took place onboard IndiGo flight 6E-5028, which departed from Mumbai on April 6. The elderly passenger, identified as Sushila Devi from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, started feeling unwell during the journey.
According to the airline officials, as her condition deteriorated, the crew declared a medical emergency and sought priority landing at the nearest airport. The aircraft landed at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar around 10 pm.
As the plane landed, emergency response team and medical staff at the airport hurried to check the passenger. But Sushila Devi was found dead by the time she was being taken away for further medical treatment.
In a statement, IndiGo stated, “Flight 6E-5028, flying from Mumbai to Varanasi, was diverted to Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) on April 6, as a result of a medical emergency onboard. In spite of immediate medical care, the passenger’s condition did not get better and was pronounced dead onboard.”
Following the incident, the local MIDC CIDCO police station was notified, and formalities were conducted at the airport. The body of the deceased was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, for post-mortem and documentation.
Having completed all legal formalities, the flight then continued on to Varanasi.
The airline further said, “We adhered to all standard procedures for safe operating practices to protect the health and safety of all passengers and staff on board.” The airline authorities said they were in constant communication with the family of the deceased, providing them support and assistance as needed.
