The Mumbai Polices Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) on Monday seized 75 kg of charas worth Rs 60 lakh and arrested three persons for drug peddling. According to the police,the accused drive down to the city with the drugs from Srinagar.
Besides the latest seizure,the ANC has registered 21 cases over the past month and arrested around 30 persons for drug peddling. According to the ANC,it has seized contraband items such as cocaine,brown sugar,charas and ganja worth around Rs.79 lakh in a month. The Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandan had ordered to launch a special drive to curb drug peddling in the city.
The arrested were identified as Rafiq Khan (30),Gulzar Khan and Arif Syed. Rafiq runs an eatery at Batmalu village in Srinagar,while Gulzar sells dry fruits in Mumbra. The trio has been booked under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and remanded to police custody till January 31.
The ANC had received an information that a major consignment of drugs was being brought into the city. Accordingly,we laid a trap near Dalvi Maidan in Sion (West) at 1.30 pm on Monday to nab the accused. The accused came in a Tavera (GJ-15BB-1220), said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.
The Tavera had hidden cavities to conceal the drugs. The charas is sourced from Srinagar. A man called Shabbir Khan drives down to the city to supply drugs. The accused make around Rs 2 lakh to Rs.2.5 lakh at a time. So far they have made seven such trips to the city.
The ANC will now seek the assistance of the Jammu and Kashmir Police to carry out furher investigation in the case.
