Officials from the Dahisar police station arrested on March 7 six members of the Republican Party of India (RPI) and two persons on March 13 for the murder of Yeshwant Othle (42),a former RPI member who had joined the Bahujan Mahasangh Party.

Othle and his associate,one Chandrakant Shinde,had been assaulted by two men with choppers on March 2 while they were on their way to Bharuch Road to buy cloth badges for members of the Bahujan Mahasangh Party,who had organised a political meet near the Dahisar Fire Brigade office.

While Shinde suffered superficial injuries on his arm,Othle succumbed to his injuries after being hit on his head with the choppers. The two men fled after the attack and the police had launched a man-hunt for them.

“During the course of the investigation,we learnt that a few members of the RPI were aggrieved with Othle for joining the Bahujan Mahasangh Party and with a view to disrupt the political meet,the six members decided to hire killers to attack Othle. After gathering evidence,we arrested the six members of the political party,identified as Bhau Sasane,Ganesh Ghuge,Nagesh Bansode,Ramesh Sasane,Balaji Jadhav and Shyam Sable,” said DCP (Zone 12) Ajit Patil.

After interrogating the six conspirators,the police arrested the two men,who had been hired by them for carrying out the attack on Othle.

“It has been found that the six conspirators had paid a sum of Rs 7,000 to the two men for the assault,which has been recovered from the two arrested accused. The two attackers,identified as Raju Negi alias Raju Nepali (37) and Sanjay Vaghela (27),have many cases against them in various police stations and Nepali had also been convicted under MPDA (Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities) Act in the year 1997,” said Patil.
