Despite statewide campaign for “copy-free-exams” by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE), a total of 42 copy cases were recorded from 19 exam centres across Maharashtra on the first day of the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination which commenced on Tuesday.

Out of the total 42 copy cases, the maximum (26) are from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division of Maharashtra state board. Out of the nine divisions of the state board, only three – Mumbai, Kolhapur and Konkan—recorded no copy cases on the first day of the exam.

Chairperson of Maharashtra State Board Sharad Gosavi, said, “We did not expect that there will be no copying at all. Compared to last year’s 58 copy-cases on day one of the HSC exam, the number of copy cases reported this year are lesser. The awareness under the copy-free-exam campaign seems to have made an impact.”

All the 42 copy cases will be scrutinised further to decide if any action needs to be taken. The scrutiny will include knowing the nature of these copy cases and whether these cases are reported by the respective exam centres or the ones spotted by state-board appointed vigilance squads.

“Knowing the nature of the copy-case is important as it determines the severity of the case. Furthermore, if the cases are reported by respective exam-centre heads, it indicates that our awareness regarding “copy-free-exams” has shown results and exam centres are being more vigilant. Action will be taken against the centres if they are found aiding the copying even if it is by not reporting it. If the copy-case is reported by our flying-squads visiting exam-centres, it indicates that the exam centre has failed in its duty,” explained Gosavi.

Responding to a significant number of copy-cases reported from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division, Gosavi said, “We have already deployed additional vigilant squads in Marathwada region. Furthermore, we are again instructing exam centres to become vigilant in identifying copy-cases during exam.”

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday ordered that any exam center found facilitating mass copying during state board exams would have its approval permanently revoked. He also directed the dismissal of any teachers or staff members who assist in such malpractice.
