Forty final year B.Sc-IT students of Shri Sidh Thakurnath (SST) College in Ulhasnagar have been suspended for allegedly submitting fake marksheets of previous years to secure admission. While the college authorities have filed a criminal case in the matter, students allege they were issued these marksheets by the college.
The issue came to light two weeks ago when the college began scrutinising admission forms submitted by some students. During the verification, the staff found that students had enclosed fake marksheets to secure admission to third year B.Sc IT.
After failing in the first or second year B.Sc-IT,these students secured admissions in the third year on the basis of fake marksheets. A student is allowed to carry maximum three Allowed To Keep Terms (ATKT). If they fail in more than three subjects, they do not get admission to the next year.
According to the principal of the college, many of these students confessed they had submitted the fake marksheets in a bid to escape ATKT exams.
J C Purswani, principal of SST College, said,In June,we found the first fake marksheet. Following which we formed an internal committee to investigate the matter and verified all the admission forms and documents. During the verification this month,we found 40 fake marksheets enclosed by the students. These fake marksheets had forged signatures on them.
College authorities met each student individually to find out from where and how they got these fake marksheets and issued show-cause notices to 40 students.
Purswani added,Students have already confessed to us and have given us names of the people who issued these fake marksheets. We have now filed a criminal case in this matter and have also informed the Mumbai University. We are waiting for the instructions from the varsity authorities to initiate action against students who had submitted these marksheets.
One of the students said,I had failed in my first semester,I cleared that exam in the third semester. Based on that,I secured admissions in TY B.Sc-IT. Now suddenly,two-three months after the classes for this academic year started, they issued us notices stating that the our marksheets are fake. We are not even allowed to attend the classes. According to officials at the college, these students admitted to paying Rs 10,000-20,000 to obtain fake marksheets.
The students have now approached a students union,Students Action Front (SAF). Prashant Ingale, president of SAF and former MU senate member, said,Now that the matter has come to light, they are blaming and punishing the students. The college should instead take action against its own employees who are running this racket in the college campus. I am sure some of the people involved in this racket are still working in the college. I have written to the vice-chancellor to take action against the college.
Meanwhile,Purswani said the investigations in this matter are underway and that the case would be resolved within next two-three days. He even said that during the investigation, names of some former students and former employees have come up and the college will take suitable action against all those involved in the racket.
