3,000 cabbies,rickshaw drivers have fake licences,badges,say police

The arrest of two men in a case of forgery has revealed that around 3,000 cabbies and rickshaw drivers in the city are operating on fake licences and badges.

The arrest of two men in a case of forgery has revealed that around 3,000 cabbies and rickshaw drivers in the city are operating on fake licences and badges. The police arrested Manohar Sinha (48) and Zakir Hussain (38) on Wednesday for forging licenses and badges used by rickshaw and cab drivers. According to the Bandra police, the racket has been operational in the city for the past 10 years.

DCP (Zone 9) Niket Kaushik said,“These two men are adept at forging licenses and making fake badges which they sell to drivers who failed to procure licenses due to various reasons. These men had their agents at various RTO offices where they would identify people who are in need of licenses. The accused would then approach the drivers and charge them some where between from Rs 1,500-3,000 for a licence.”

When asked about how many fake licences had been sold by them so far,Kaushik said,“Our enquiries have revealed that these men had sold around 3,000 licenses and badges so far. In most cases, the people having the licences do not possess proper driving skills. This could increase the chances of road accidents. Moreover,a driving license is a very important document just like a passport or a PAN card.”

Kaushik also informed that Sinha had worked as an instructor with a driving school for many years and this helped him create a customer base of people in need of licences. “We have approached the Traffic Police Department also and will be taking their help to track the drivers who are operating on fake licences,” he added.

Kaushik added that the men forged the licence with such skills that it looked very real. Even a traffic police constable could not differentiate between the fake and the genuine. On being asked if the police suspect any RTO official’s involvement,Kaushik said,“So far,we have not come across any evidence to suggest that, but such a possibility cannot be ruled out. Right now,our priority is to trace the identities and whereabouts of other people involved in the racket. We suspect around 6-7 more people to be a part of this.”
