A teenaged girl and a 40-year-old divorcee allegedly killed themselves at Antop Hill within a span of 24 hours,police said.
In the first incident,Saraswati Patil (19) doused herself with kerosene and immolated self at her house at Nehru Nagar in the Sion-Koliwada area on Wednesday,the police said.
Saraswati used to work in a garment factory at Cotton Green. On Tuesday night,when she came home late from work,her mother enquired about the reason for coming late. Saraswati made vague excuses. Unsatisfied with the reply,her mother told her that she would accompany her to the factory on Wednesday to enquire with her employers about her work timings,which led to an argument between the mother and daughter, an officer from the Antop Hill policestation said.
On Wednesday morning,when Saraswati was getting ready for work,the mother again told her about she accompanying her to the factory. After some time,Saraswati went to the mezzanine floor for some work and set herself ablaze,the police said. Her parents rushed her to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival due to 99 per cent burn injuries,they added.
The police now plan to interrogate her employers over her alleged suicide.
In the second incident,Varsha Sakhre (40),a divorcee,allegedly killed herself at her house at Sector 7 by consuming acid on Tuesday night. According to the police,Varsha had been steadily slipping into depression after her son died within two hours of his birth three years ago. A year after that,she had got divorced from her husband and ever since had been staying with her father Jairam Sakhre at Antop Hill. On Tuesday night,Varsha went to the bathroom and consumed hydrochloric acid used for cleaning the floor of the bathroom. She was taken to Sion Hospital where she died while being treated, Police Sub Inspector Suhas Sarfare from the Antop Hill police station said. In his statement to the police,Varshas father said that she had been suffering from acute depression ever since the death of her child.
