Nearly two months after over 490 children were taken ill after they consumed a cupcake provided under the mid-day meal scheme in Anjuman Noorul Islam Urdu High School in Andheri’s Sakinaka, the BMC has suspended a civic official in-charge of supervising the mid-day meal for not performing his duty.
The civic administration had earlier served a showcause notice to the government aided private school following the incident. The students had complained of illness after eating cakes distributed to them by a NGO, Parivartan Mahila Mandal, as part of mid day meal scheme at the school.
After investigating the matter, the civic adminstration found that Ganesh Nayak, the supervisor of the mid-day meal scheme attached to the education department of the BMC, had failed to visit the school and check the food supplied to students under the scheme. “However, Nayak had made entries in the register claiming to have visited the school regularly to check the food,” said a senior civic official from the education department.
