Two men were arrested by the Mumbai cyber police on Saturday for creating a fake website resembling the official Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) portal and cheating applicants of lakhs of rupees. Police suspect at least 10–15 persons have lost money in the scam.
Earlier this month, MHADA released a list of properties that would be given at discounted rates in the lottery when people went to its website for details. An officer said that the fraudsters created a similar website and cheated people by taking payments from them.
The website was created by Kalpesh Sevak, one of the arrested, police said adding he was arrested in the past as well in a cheating case.
Based on his interrogation, police found one Amol Patel who posed as a MHADA officer and duped people. Patel, too, was placed under arrest.
DCP Datta Nalawade said that either the victims were directly cheated through the website or through agents who approached prospective buyers. They introduced Patel as MHADA official who assured them of getting a house.
“While we have arrested two people in the case, we suspect the involvement of several others who will be arrested soon,” an officer said. The two accused were produced before the court and remanded in police custody for six days.
The Mumbai police registered an FIR in the case based on a complaint by MHADA after they were made aware about people losing money to scamsters.
